High Dene is a 500m2 Arts and Crafts style home, set in an elevated position above the Wharfe Valley. The front of the house commands spectacular views to the South across open moorland. The design represents a contemporary take on the Arts and Crafts style in order to meet the expectations of the planning authority and demonstrates our willingness to treat each project as bespoke and listen to the demands of our clients. During the design process, we used visits to Blackwell, the Arts and Crafts House in the Lake District as a reference point for the design.
The house has been designed to reflect the existing landscape, using the natural fall of the land to reduce the impact of the new structure by creating a basement garage with ancillary rooms attached and a den. Living accommodation comprising living room, kitchen, utility, formal dining room, study and a garden room is situated on the ground floor with direct access to the south facing garden and balcony. The first floor accommodates five bedrooms, ensuite and house bathroom and there is a guest suite within the roof space on the second floor.
The house benefits from the passive solar gains associated with a southerly aspect and a high thermal mass internally, combined with underfloor heating and heavily insulated walls and roofs result in a comparatively low demand on the heating system.
