Low energy extension to semi detached house

This recently completed extension to a 1920's semi deals with the issues likely to face many home owners over the coming years with regard to how an existing dwelling can become more thermally efficient and therefore, more sustainable but without affecting the fabric of the existing building. Whilst there are many alternatives, here is one solution.

This extension incorporates a two storey solar collector, designed to maximise the benefit of free solar heating. Excess heat is collected and pumped into the heart of the original house, in order to offset existing thermal losses. The extension benefits from high levels of insulation and a unique combination of double and triple glazing, together with mechanical heat recovery ventilation, solar thermal panels, a green roof and sustainable materials.
